The Sudamala Tale.

Sudamala refers to the cleansing and purification of body and soul. It is also the name of a poem, part of the ancient Mahabharata, concerning the goddess Durga. According to the story, Siwa’s consort Uma was cursed to live as a demon for her infidelities (taking the terrible form of the goddess Durga, also called Ra Nini in Bali). She was accompanied by Kalantaka and Kalanjaya, two other divine beings similarly cursed. With the aid of Bhatara Guru, Sahadewa, one of the five Pandawa brothers, restores her to her benevolent form by performing a purification rite. Sahadewa (now called Sudamala – the one that cleanses impurities and evil) then battles Kalantaka and Kalanjaya; when he defeats them, they too resume their divine forms. Shadow puppet performances of Sudamala are said to be able to reverse curses, ward off disasters and neutralize negative forces. It is usually performed as part of purification ceremonies and rites in Bali and Java. Sudamala Suites & Villas, Senggigi is an Indonesian luxury boutique art hotel brand. It is a lifelong passion project that builds, develops and manages both the stunning Sanur property, a hidden gem in mystical Bali, and the dramatic Senggigi property, a glorious beachfront resort in pristine Lombok.
